over the last 250 years there have been considerable changes in Epping. Originally the land of the Wallumedigal people, Epping has developed into a popular and successful suburb.

Before the European settlement, Epping would have been all bush land. There were lots of fauna such as kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and echidnas in the area. There were also lots of trees such as the gum tree and banksias, blue gum and more. The Wallumedigal people would have hunted and lived in this area.

It was in 1796 that settlers moved into the Epping area when land was granted to 2 naval officers. Epping was first called Barren Ridge.

After, around 1804 honest settlers avoided the area as criminals including some that had escaped from the jails came to Epping to live.

In 1819 they built a timber mill that processed the logs. As land was cleared people also started a lot of orchards such as orange orchards, lemon orchards and apple orchards.

Epping began to change from bush land to residential after the first subdivision of a farm in 1883. They were building a lot of houses and shops while still cutting down a lot of trees.

In 1886 the railway passed through Epping. The railway was called Field of Mars and then in 1887 it changed to East Carlingford and after in 1899 it was called EPPING. The rail line led to more people coming to the area.

In 1914 WW1 began and a lot of people went off to the war, mostly young men. In 1922 to remember all the people that had died they made a war memorial.

Epping continued to grow through the 1900’s and today is a mix of houses, schools, shops and is becoming more important as a public transport hub.
